CHALLENGE #3.3-SUPPORTING CHARITIES/DONATION FOR A GOOD CAUSE
I (Anita) always enjoyed painting animals, florals and abstracts. I wanted to build a purpose-driven brand. I had a growing interest in sustainable fashion brands so I started an eco/sustainable kids clothing line with ethical supply chains in mind I scan and edit my artwork into designs and sold it via various platforms and a dedicated website-www.pupuyuandco.com.
As a mother, I look for comfortable, adaptive, long lasting clothes for my kids and not something that is drowning in logos, embellishments, and glitter. Creating a clothing line that offers the same to other mothers was truly inspiring. 5% of our profits are donated to Children charitable organizations.

CHALLENGE #2.3-KEEPING CULTURAL TRADITIONS ALIVE
Participating in traditional-themed games/activities & reminded each other the importance of embracing and remembering our cultural roots…..

Puneetha & Visha joined forces to make a decorative “Kolam” at the entrance of our office. ‘Kolam’ is an Indian form of traditional decorative art that is drawn by using rice flour as per age-old conventions. It is also drawn using white stone powder, chalk or chalk powder, often along with natural or synthetic colour powders. It is usually drawn at the main entrance of one’s abode to bring prosperity. The use of rice powder was to invite birds and small creatures to feast as a welcoming other beings as a tribute to harmonious co-existence.

Yati & Aizzat challenged themselves to a traditional game of “congkak” lasting about half hour. Ping Pong
Ping-Pong as a sport which requires a high level of concentration and resilience with the players being fairly social-distanced mirrors also unfolding of this ongoing pandemic, an unusual chapter of the human history.
Many of us used to much practise this sport when we were school boys/girls in 80s or 90s. Back then, Ping-Pong was almost the only affordable team sport for many Chinese schools and we developed many “non-classical” ways to play Ping-Pong. My colleagues and I went out to replay such “wild practice” recently to raise the funds for the MI charities.

This month's update
The JBA team has been very busy during the month of October. The challenge we set ourselves was for our team to travel the equivalent of over 1000 km during the month of October by a combination of walking, cycling and swimming.
One team member climbed Kilimanjaro during October, which is a fantastic way to get those kilometres under her belt (well done Michelle!). Deepa has read 3 books: The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff... and it's all small stuff by Richard Carlson and Dee has painted 5 pictures as their contribution towards the team’s goal, as they couldn’t participate fully in the physical challenge.
I am pleased to say that the JBA team has smashed the initial goal of 1000 km, having travelled a grand total of 1772 km in October, and so far has raised in excess of AED 7,500 (£1500) for Larchfield and Unicef which is also far more than the goal of AED 2,500 we hoped to achieve. Well done everyone!

First Attempt at Sea Kayaking
Having ticked off roads and skies from my CtWC list, my next adventure was sea kayaking in Bosham Harbour. Bosham, a beautiful village on the South Coast dating back to Roman times, floods twice daily as the tide comes in from the English Channel. All was going well until the wind picked up. Just after this photo-op I dug in a little too deep with one of the oars, the wind caught me and I capsized the kayak - in full view of the patrons of the local harbour-side pub and ice-cream stall.

Undeterred by my early swim, I climbed back on board and managed a full afternoon of kayaking in deeper waters and glorious sunshine before visiting Goodwood motor racing circuit early evening for 5 laps on my bike.
Energetic day!

67 miles off road
Generally, my mountain biking falls into the category of, “weekend warrior,” a couple of hours, 25 miles ploughing up and down trails in south Oxfordshire with a group of other MAMILs (Middle Aged Men in Lycra).
So tackling 67 miles off road, semi-competitively in one hit was always going to be a bit of a challenge – but since I was doing it for the Connect the World Challenge, I wanted both to amass some MIles and encourage friends and contacts to sponsor me for our two charities, Larchfield Children’s Home and UNICEF.
Well… suffice to say, I was suitably challenged! The ride took 6hrs and 2 mins in the saddle, bouncing over up-and-down single-track, hardened chalk ruts (scary on the downhill; a battle on the uphill) and lumpy and stony trails… but, whenever there was a chance to look up, the views across the English countryside in the weak sunshine, were spectacular. I was propelled along by 2 caffeine gels, 4 protein bars, 2 bananas, a handful of date rolls and a simple desire to finish and not do a disservice to this magnificent MI endeavour that is the Connect the World Challenge. Completing it was great and the support and sponsorship from friends and contacts made it even better – oh, and for once, I didn’t fall off my bike!

Protecting the environment and connecting the world
During the Belgian “week of mobility” we have organised a day around alternate mobility where all members of our firm were encouraged to come to the office without a car or motorcycle. This way we could collect as many miles as possible for the Mackrell International CtWC, all while contributing to the environment.

We had people walk, run, cycle, mountain bike, hike, … their commute to work and topped off at a collective total of 425km travelled. Knowing that a lot of the firm members either live relatively close to the office or worked from home, you can rest assured that some heroic efforts were put in to boost those kilometres.

We challenged ourselves to go on 10km to 15km hikes to enjoy the outdoors - a nice break from the office environment. The hikes challenged us physically but the scenery made it so worth it.
A driving experience to remember
The challenge was to learn how to drive professionally on an off-road track. This taught us the technical skills to utilise when going on outdoor adventures. The BMW driving experience was a very different, yet rewarding, challenge from our day to day challenges faced.
A day of golf
There's no better way to challenge ourselves than through a round of golf. It is a technical sport that requires concentration, diligence and skill. We enjoy the challenge of a great outdoor activity.

Volunteering and Travel
I had the honor of driving Miss Maggie and Mister Cody from Indianapolis, Indiana to Lexington, Kentucky for check-ups in July. Both are service-dogs-in-training with Indiana Canine Assistant Network and were fabulous passengers. It was a twelve-hour day, but I would be their chauffeur any time! I logged 7 hours in July volunteering with Little River Wetlands Project. For one project, I monitored a trail in Eagle Marsh, searching for monarch butterflies, whether in the egg, caterpillar, pupa, or adult stages. This study is done in cooperation with Monarch Joint Venture; the more we know about the health and numbers of monarchs, the more we can understand about the wellbeing of our environment for monarchs and for other species, including humans! So far, I have seen one egg, one newly hatched caterpillar and 10 adults. The study will continue into September for those of us in Indiana. I also have helped with testing of a river tributary in Eagle March, including chemistry tests and scooping for aquatic species, to help us gauge the health of the water and the local ecosystem. After their photo op (their presence is uploaded to a database), all the creatures were quickly and safely returned from the ice cube tray to their creek.

One of the few sports I can keep up with my sons, okay the only sport, is golf. My dad taught me how to play, and I can remember the great times we shared on the course together. Wanting to share the same experiences, my boys picked up the game a few years ago. It's difficult to find the time to play, particularly living in a cosmopolitan city like Shanghai, but after finding a 9-hole course in the city (one we never knew existed!), I am using the Mackrell Connect the World Challenge to get us back out there with my boys. As usual with male drivers we had to experience just how fast it could accelerate and the fact that we had only tapped the throttle etc . I was admiring the spanky leather interior and the gloss red paintwork - women! Whilst we only drove 25km to add to the Challenge mileage, we did cover it in a very short time! Want one.
